AI Visibility tracking is the process of tracking how a website/websites appear in LLMS (AI) for a defined list of keywords or “prompts”. It’s very similar in principle to traditional SEO rank tracking except it works differently in that “prompts” are tracked across multiple LLMs (large language models).

LLMS do not work the same way as search engines, therefore tracking “rankings” is different to tracking “prompt” visibility.

Generally in AI Visibility we’re tracking the frequency AND position in the responses generated, however, because LLMS vary wildly + because of LLM personalisation it’s often to really nail down anything close to what “rankings” are.

Ultimately, AI Visibility tracking gives brands the ability to see how often their brand, product or service is being mentioned in LLM responses.

We offer bespoke prompt tracking solutions, so we can facilitate as many prompts as required. The more prompts tracked the greater the cost - the same with LLM coverage, the more LLMS you select the more the cost will be.

We generally recommend tracking between 250-500 prompts as a general guide, we typically recommend tracking prompts that are a derivative of keywords from Google search console data where impression data is a good baseline indicator for demand.

Keyword tracking is typically associated with Google search whereas prompt tracking is attributed to LLMS by default. Whilst people DO search in LLMS for keywords (generally 1-4 words in length) a lot of people use LLMs in a conversational context meaning their searches are less about keywords and more about “prompts” because of the length.

So, we help clients to differentiate and understand the difference between prompt tracking and keyword tracking - we provide both solutions for clients looking to track.

In short - keywords tend to be more specific and direct i.e. SEO consultant or Best SEO agency whereas prompts tend to be longer and more personalised such as “What SEO consultant in London is best and under £1000 a month”.

So AI visibility is actually very subjective, because it’s generally calculated across the total performance of tracked prompts and not necessarily the full coverage of what’s being searched out there. Unfortunately LLMS do not yet provide a platform showing brands how and when their brand was cited and for what, so, AI visibility is really calculated off the total performance of tracked prompts.

What we generally do with clients to help maximise the benefits of AI visibility tracking is:

  • We go through Google Search Console data to extract the most popular searched queries and also longer-tail queries, we use the impressions to gauge popularity
  • We then set up and track these prompts, this is how we generate the initial AI visibility score
  • We then look at the competitors that appear most across the same prompt (call it prompt overlap
  • From this, we can then get a real feel for your brand performance vs competitors

We also use external tools such as AHREFS brand radar to look at the broader picture too.
