About Sage

Sage is a global leader in accounting, payroll and HR software for businesses of all sizes, operating Sage.com alongside a large portfolio of sub-brands and regional domains. The wider Sage estate is built on Sitecore and serves multiple international markets across multiple languages and regions.

The Challenge

Sage operates a large and complex international SEO setup on Sitecore, with multiple sub-domains and independent CTLD domains leading to cannibalisation between EN variants on root and sub-domains.

A complex Sitecore implementation across the wider Sage estate made significant SEO changes more difficult to scope and execute at organisation scale.

Cannibalisation was occurring between EN variants of the website on both root and sub-domains, weakening performance for shared accountancy software queries.

The multi-brand, multi-region setup required a coordinated approach to hreflang, consolidation and cannibalising content across regions and languages.

The Solution

We recommended global consolidation of EN with a limited sub-set of exclusions, advised on adjustments to their hreflang strategy, and addressed weak and cannibalising content where underperforming pages were duplicated across regions.

Our Strategy

The strategy for Sage.com was to first perform a deep-dive on their GSC configuration, looking across domain and URL properties and to export, review and extrapolate the data.

We used SEO Stack to process all of the data and to identify areas where there were content performance issues, cannibalisation (both in EN and across other languages), and issues with indexing amongst other issues.

The strategic approach was to first crawl, rule out technical issues, review indexing and non-indexed pages to identify issues, and then to go through actively indexed pages and queries to find active and legacy cannibalisation.

From this, we produced an audit with the strategic approach we would take to address the issues across Sage.com and its sub-brands.

The Goals

  • Review and feedback on Sage SEO strategy
  • Identify and feedback on international SEO issues
  • Propose solutions for international SEO and cannibalisation
  • Help grow traffic and rankings in international markets for accountancy software
