Bounce Rate

Bounce rate is the number of visitors who visit your site, enter and leave again in quick succession, without venturing onto any other pages.

ALT text is a description of your image or your infographic, or whatever it is that you need to describe, should the image fail to load, the reader can still get a sense of what you were trying to portray.

When you type a search request into google, the search engine results page (SERP) will routinely turn up just as many images as text results. We live in a visual world after all and a picture paints a thousand words. Think about it, would you rather scan through a playful infographic or wade through a wall of text?

And if you’re creating these colour visuals for your audiences, you want readers to be able to find them easily.

Hence the use of ALT text.

What is ALT Text?

ALT text, or alternate text, is the written description of your visuals that will show up on your reader’s screen should the visual fail to load, or the browser blocks the image, or the reader is visually impaired, or the reader simply hovers the mouse over the image.

ALT text is an additional attribute that can be added to a visual’s tag in HTML.

ALT text is a description of your image or your infographic, or whatever it is that you need to describe, should the image fail to load, the reader can still get a sense of what you were trying to portray.

ALT text also benefits Google’s search spiders as they can’t see your image, so if you want the image ranked, you have to tell them what it is and what they should rank it for.

What is the Purpose of ALT Text?

ALT text not only allows visually impaired readers access to your visuals – by describing the image, you can paint a picture for a blind person – but it also gives you another source of organic traffic to your website.

People searching for text results will hopefully find you if you have SEO-ed your website adequately. However, you could be missing a trick if you haven’t SEO-ed your images, videos or infographics.

What is the point of putting lots of energy into creating these awesome visual aids, if no one is going to be able to find them? By assigning all of your visuals with ALT text you allow search engines to easily crawl and rank your website.

The purpose of ALT text is to turn your visuals into searchable entities and boost your traffic and your ranking.

What Other Name Does ALT Text Go By?

ALT text is also known as alt tags and alt descriptions.

Where Does ALT Text Go?

ALT text can be applied to any visual that you include on your website or online article or document.

Why is ALT Text Important For SEO Purposes?

Image SEO has never been so important.

Whilst Google is incredible at determining the value and relevance of your written content, it is still a machine at the end of the day and needs assistance to understanding visual elements.

ALT text for images to Google are the equivalent of telling a visually impaired person what they’re looking at. Google’s algorithm can’t rank an image if it doesn’t understand what it is.

What Should ALT Text Include?

  • A description of the image. Nothing waffly, just be specific. Let the image guide you. And remember you’re writing for humans.
  • Keep your ALT text below 125 characters – typically screen reading tools for the visually impaired will cut off after 125 characters, so if you’re still banging on about what the image is, you’ve lost your reader.
  • Don’t set the scene. There is no need to start your ALT text by saying ‘this is an image of…’, just jump right in and describe it.
  • Include your keywords to provide context, but don’t be spammy.
  • Don’t set the image title tag text the same as the ALT text.

How to Add ALT Text to Images

In your content management system – the back end of your website – when you click on an image in the body of your text you should get the option to optimise the image. By clicking through you should be presented with the option to enter ALT text for your image.

If you’re including images in a Word or PowerPoint document, insert the image into the document then right click it, and select Format picture. ALT text is one of your options to edit the image.

In Google docs, insert the image into the document then right click it, and select ALT text from the menu.

How Do I Write ALT Text For SEO?

The point of ALT text for SEO is to provide a clear, written description of what the visual is. Keep the description brief and on point. Don’t make it spammy, you will only get penalised by Google for your efforts.

The ALT text should provide context for the image in the article it is included in or the website it features on.

The ALT text should provide a level of detail that accurately portrays the image, without being too vague.

If you don’t have enough context or detail for your ALT text, ensure it at least ties in with what the overall message is i.e. tie it in with the title of your blog post or article or website.
