If a website cannot be found in the top 3 pages for keywords relevant to it, then there is a very good chance that it needs to be optimized. SEO is often misunderstood as a quick process to get to number 1 in popular search engines. This is not the case, SEO is a process designed to enhance a websites visibility for the correct keywords. It also focuses on ensuring the correct pages are returned for queries relevant to them.
SEO also takes into account user retention, click through rates, analytical data and more.
A websites goal is to have good visibility in order to have larger traffic volumes, at the same time its important that the traffic is relative traffic, meaning, the traffic should be looking for the things that the website has to offer, this is why keyword research is an essential process.
Websites that do not have a good ranking profile will fail to have the traffic levels that other high performing organic websites may benefit from. Of course other marketing avenues such as pay per click can help generate quick traffic, this can end up becoming quite costly, especially when targeting competitive markets.
Optimisation will deliver good results and will help a website receive larger volumes of traffic that is more likely to stay or convert.
Most websites that are built require optimization because the link between web designers and search engineers is broken, meaning that as long as the website looks good and functions properly, other factors are not important. This is why the SEO market is so large, as there is an abundance of websites that have been built, but just sit dormant, rarely receiving traffic other then traffic generated as a result of word of mouth.
