Ranking reports are a key part of any search engine optimisation project. It is vital to keep track of the websites position in major search engines for keywords related to the website. Typically a ranking report will focus on all the keywords from the initial keyword research process as well as long tail keywords drawn from Google Analytics.
Ranking reports can be run frequently, however, the intervals are dependant on the volume of keywords being tracked. Due to the nature of search engines limiting queries to prevent ranking reports, applications such as Advanced Web Ranking, Web Position Gold, SEO Elite and Web CEO have to run slowly to avoid search engines placing a temporary ban or automated request lock on the IP address making the queries.
Typically the delay between each query ranges from 10-20 seconds, each query is the value of searching 1 page for 1 keyword. If a ranking report covers 250 keywords in the top 100 results, this could result in thousands of queries, which could take up to a day to run.
Our search engine optimisation package provides ranking reports up to 8 times a month or on request. We also provide you with the software to check your websites ranking performance independently. This is a great way to keep on top of keyword positions within Google. Typically there will always be rise and fall between keywords, it is impossible to have 100% forward movement unless the website has never ranked for any keywords. Due to natural search result fluctuation, there will always be a slight decline where in other keyword areas there maybe a slight increase.
Natural search fluctuation however does not cloud the issue of site progression, as generally a website will make large jumps forward, and as it nears page 1 will begin to slow in its progress. This period is the maturing period for websites that have been optimised or had more backlinks built to them.
Ranking reports are typically run across multiple data centers to gain an average position for the website and its keywords. The ranking reports can typically take in excess of 12 hours to run whilst checking website position for multiple keywords across multiple data centers.
A ranking report will typically show a variety of fields including the keyword field, URL field, and the positions field which will cover current position, previous position, change in positions and the best position that the page has had for the specified keyword.
