Ok, so here is your first step in optimizing a website. This guide will help you get to grips with basic SEO terminology, whilst providing you with an insight to how SEO works, and how changes you make on a website impact on the ability to rank.

A key thing to remember, which is the most important thing, and that's Google is a search engine, and as a search engine, its goal is to deliver the most relevant results, and the highest quality results. When you perform search engine optimization, you are enhancing a website in order to get it to rank for the right keywords in higher positions throughout Google and other search engines.

The whole process can be quite time consuming, but the rewards are numerous.

For this guide, you will need to have a website of your own to perform some of the tasks. If this is not possible you can setup a website with a free hosting company such as www.angelfire.com.

You can continue to use this guide without a website, but you may not be able to join in on some of the demonstrations.

To get the most out of this guide you will require various tools. The tools that will be referenced will be free, but we will make some recommendations on good tools that require a license to use.

If you would like to learn more about SEO elements, including everything from Backlinks to Title tags, you can learn more by visiting our website at www.assertive-media.co.uk.

At www.assertive-media.co.uk you can find a host of tools and resources free for you to use. Feel free to share this guide with others who may want to join the SEO world, taking control of a website and ensuring it can be seen by visitors across the globe. And remember, a website is only as good as the level of traffic it gets, why invest lots on a website that returns no investment or interest?.

In this guide, if you get stuck with any of the references, feel free to flick back to the SEO anatomy section which covers some, but not all of the SEO elements.
