Keyword trend analysis is the process which identifies keyword performance over an extended period of time. This will allow you to see the performance changes and keyword trends over the space of a few years (depending on the keywords).
Keyword trend analysis is a great way to filter out keywords that only have very short peak traffic levels, or keywords that have no trend data. Typically, keywords with no trend data are very poor performing keywords. Using trend data, you can also see how a keywords performance has changed over an annual period. From year to year keywords can rise or decline depending on popularity, even economics can impact on keyword searches.
Below is a screenshot of the trend data for the keyword "Mortgages". As you can see, the economic slowdown had caused the decline in mortgage based searches.
Trend data is useful in many ways, typically it can help filter out keywords that are seasonal, or have showed significant decline, although these factors alone should not lead to the removal of keywords, instead they should be used along with conventional keyword research methods.
Peak keyword performance can be established using Google trends. Typical examples of peak performance keyword data can be found in the travel and holidays industry, whereby more people begin to search for season based holidays, such as winter ski holidays, or summer holidays abroad.
For example, the search data for the keyword "Ski Holidays" shows a significant peak in the winter months, from October to March the search volumes peak significantly, whilst in the spring and summer months the traffic levels steadily decline.
You can use this tool for as many different keywords as you like, gradually uncovering performance data for the keywords from the keyword research process.
