Choosing Keywords
Keyword research is an incredibly important part of organic search engine optimisation. This process is typically overlooked or delivered in a way that does not properly convey the information needed to choose keywords properly. The ultimate selection factor will typically center around keyword search volumes, as a natural choice, most would select keywords that deliver the highest volumes of traffic, but as we have researched, this can lead to a complete failure in an SEO project.

Think in a logical perspective, if you selected a keyword that returned 1000 visitors a day, would you know the consistency of this search volume? how long would it take you to rank in a pole position for this keyword? what would the bounce rate be? these are just some of the questions that go unanswered during the keyword research process.

We have seen many occasions during our independent research and trials that SEO companies frequently under deliver during keyword research, often making false promise to gain new business, but is this really the way to go? No it isn't. Expectations would not be manageable if the selective keyword was out of reach, yet this is often ignored just to gain the new business.

Our keyword research service is one of the most comprehensive services available in this field. We set realistic targets and manage expectations by advising on keyword selection, for example, if you were running a mortgage website, and wanted to rank in the top 10 for the keyword "Mortgage" we would advise of the long period of time it would take to rank for this keyword, especially if the mortgage website suffers from a young domain, low content levels etc.

Our keyword research process not only looks at the right keywords, it also looks at the trend data for each keyword, how much it would cost in its equivalent in Pay per click, how many competitors there are and what the bounce rate would potentially be. Using this data, we can build a clear picture of the best target keywords. Why rank number 1 for a keyword with 1000 visitors a day if your bounce rate is likely to be 60%? this would mean a keyword that returns 700 visitors a day with a 20% bounce rate would be far more effective.
When running the keyword research process we perform the following actions to filter out the best possible keywords to rank for.

Initial Keyword Seeding

This process is the first step which will typically involve your recommendations or advised keywords, around this information we would build a selection of seed lists which could then be used to find additional keywords. This maximises the keyword scope to ensure that good keywords are not left out.

Keyword Scoping & Content Relevancy

This process will then match keywords up to appropriate pages within the website, any keywords that do not relate properly to the websites content will be removed, alternatively we can recommend new pages are built to accommodate content for target keywords. This process filters out keywords that are unlikely to yield any results due to little or no relativity.

Keyword Data Population

This will find all the available information attached to keywords including average monthly and yearly search volumes, the cost per click, level of competitors, the seasonal search volume shifts, monthly search figures and trend data and the ranking estimations. All the information populated will then be used for the research process.

Keyword Extraction

This will involve the extraction of keywords, this process has many different results depending on specific ranking deadlines. Typically we will identify keywords that can begin to deliver traffic in the short run, and separating keywords that would take a long while to rank for, which will give flexibility later on in the search engine optimisation project. Keywords are then arranged based on search volume, cost per click, competitor and the ranking ETA.
