ALT Attributes is a commonly mentioned attribute within SEO, although its SEO impact is neglible, if anything. SEO relies on factors relative to content and theme, image tagging with alt attributes is only beneficial to display images in search engine image searches.
This process is commonly highlighted as important by many SEO agencies. This is WRONG! and should be challenged.
Alt attributes are not required for SEO, instead, the benefits of ALT attributes relate to usability, accessibility and image based search.
Although this is not an important SEO factor, it should be implemented for the other reasons mentioned above.
An ALT attribute was developed as a web standard, designed to provide a description in case the image becomes unavailable or unable to load.
You can see an ALT attribute on an active image by moving the mouse over the image and leaving it,
Images that are tagged with an ALT attribute stand a better chance of being displayed in Google's image search. Although this is not a priority for those who want to achieve web traffic rather than sharing imagery.
When assigning ALT Attributes, you should obey the following:
1. Describe the image, rather than stuffing it with keywords
2. Do not make the description too long, a few words at best
3. Only use the web standards method ( alt="" ) rather than any ajax or dynamic system
4. Do not use duplication descriptions on different images, search engines can utilize recognition via pattern recognition and file size.
Again, ALT Attributes are worth assigning to images, but are not an immediate priority for SEO, but instead, enhances the experience for visitors when visiting your website.
The standard for implementation is as follows
