Competitor analysis is an important part of any search engine optimisation process. Snake oil SEO companies generally do not offer any sort of competitor analysis or website profiling. Although it is common logic to use compliant SEO techniques to achieve a page 1 position for your relevant keywords, it is also a positive step in identifying just what the competitors have done in order to take further steps.
When you search in Google for keywords relevant to your business, the first 3 websites will be the leading websites for examination, purely because of their high placement in natural search.
We identify a group of websites that rank well for a series of keywords, this guarantees the succession of the competitor in order for accurate and reliable competitor profiling.
A golden rule for good organic SEO is to do what the competitors do, only better, providing the methods used are compliant. Some competitors have been known to participate in non compliant activities in order to achieve a high ranking, although this does work, it is a potential timebomb. Websites that use non compliant techniques often get reported to search engines like Google, once this happens, Google will review the website manually, and can either be devalued or removed from the search index.
When profiling a competitor we can identify any non compliant methods used from doorway pages & hidden text through to paid links and other blackhat techniques. Many SEO related websites will document SEO compliance with the following descriptions.
Website operating in black hat SEO can sometimes rank in a high position, however, these websites are generally short lived and end up penalised or banned from a search engines index. Webmasters often report websites that are known to participate in black hat search engine optimisation.

Whitehat or White Hat Search Engine Optimisation
This is an alternative name for compliant SEO methods. Websites that operate white hat SEO are operating according to best practice and the Google webmaster guidelines. White hat SEO involves the legitimate promotion of a website by enhancing the on and off site factors without trying to deceive the end user or search engine.
Greyhat or Grey Hat Search Engine Optimisation
This is where a website is using techniques that overstep the boundary, these are typically minor compliance issues which can involve keyword stuffing or the overuse of keywords within ALT tags. Many websites operating with grey hat search engine optimisation do not suffer any initial penalties but can sometimes loose footing in the search engine indexes.
Blackhat or Black Hat Search Engine Optimisation
This is where a website is using non-compliant methods to rank well in organic natural search. Websites operating on black hat search engine optimisation typically use techniques such as hiding content, using re-directs to send a user to a page different from the listed page in the search index, having doorway pages that provide no useful information, stuffing excessive amounts of keywords into content and more.
