Google due to release a new version of Search, Google Caffeine

Friday, August 14, 2009

Google has been hard at work developing a new version of itself, designed to improve results over various news markets, whilst improving results and improving the speed at which documents are indexed and returned. The name Caffeine was used with relevancy to the kick that one would get from drinking lots of coffee or energy drinks.

Google’s upcoming version of search will deliver lightning fast results, and when searching for news topics, will deliver content as fresh as can be. No longer will news have to wait to be indexed, popular news resources such as CNN, BBC News, MSNBC and other news outlets will experience much faster indexing times on published news results. Users can expect to see news entries available within an hour of them being put live.

This goal will help rid Google’s typical delay that websites would otherwise have to wait. Now, features will be delivered at lightning speeds, designed to utilise more of the worlds web 2.0 technology.

The goal is to speed up, improve and enhance search like never before.

Lets look at the results from the beta version of Google Caffeine:

1: Speed

Searches conducted in Google can range between 0.15 and 0.90 seconds, in Google caffeine this is expected to drop to anywhere from 0.05 to 0.15 seconds, which is a significant improvement over the current timings. It is important that search engines deliver results almost instantaneously as users may look at alternative resources. Although the timing is fractional, this ends up making a massive difference to server load times in the long run when millions of searches are being conducted simultaneously.

2: Accuracy

When searching for a news result, how accurate are the results that come back? Well, relevancy is important, but the news results will be based on source. News feeds that are searched for, or recognised news topics will return websites appropriate to the region, and then based on quality.

Results will be better seperated depending on the type of news and the region the search is being conducted from.

We found results to be very accurate, often returning news.bbc.co.uk for popular headlines.

3: Temporal Relevancy:

The relevancy of instantaneous news results is also vital, this will again be based on region and news provider. Some outlets take longer to stream a full story which would have an impact on the position of the result. We found the results again to be very accurate, but more often or not, the same news providers would appear for most headlines.

If searches are becoming quicker, how will Google be able to manage rankings for temporary results? The answer is easy, Google will update the index very frequently to ensure the latest news posts are always visible.

Google Caffeine is expected to roll out after extensive user testing. We think the idea is great and will help people find popular news outlets with fresh news.

Google Caffeine will also show more results per keyword. Filtering restrictions will be lowered in order to enhance the volume of relevant pages.

We look forward to see how the new Google Caffeine performs under popular visitor load.
